The firm was founded with a discovery, born in a spasm of entrepreneurial courage to a world ready for a design-conscious wholesale manufacturer. The year was 1990, and Michael Mastrangelo and Marvin Sturtz were organizing a shipment of leather-bound day-planners when a plan, almost audacious in its simplicity, hit the future business partners.

Specifically, it was the “001 Trifold,” later known as the “Boxy Agenda.” It would change their lives.

Standing over those neatly boxed piles of leather planners, Michael and Marvin realized they could create something even better—using paper. They would make an affordable, attractive day-planner, one that a factory could print using patterns and designs that Marvin and Michael would find and draft themselves. These planners would require much less turn-around and overhead than their leather-bound brethren, would cost a fraction of the price to make, and might still command a neat price at the register.

That is, of course, if they could find the right look for their new planner. Without the right design, their dream (and investment) would die before it even left the factory.

As it turned out, their hunches were correct, and Tri-Coastal Design was created in the early hours of 1990, founded on its devotion to continue to remain at the forefront of fashion, design, and trends.
